Gurdwara Shaheed Ganj Sahib is the place where Baba Deep Singh Ji along with other Singhs achieved martyrdom fighting the Mughal forces who were disrespecting Sri Harmandir Sahib.

The great Sikh scholar and martyr Baba Deep Singh was mortally wounded when the Afghan invader Ahmed Shah Abdali ordered the Harmandar Sahib blown up and the Sacred Tank filled in. Baba Deep Singh, took up the sword on a mission to restore the sanctity of the Sikh's most revered Temple. He along with five thousand faithful Sikhs fought against the Muslim forces of Jahan Khan. Although heavily outnumbered the Sikhs fought bravely. Baba Deep Singh Ji had vowed to die in the precincts of the Golden Temple. Baba Ji was still far from the town when during the battle, he was beheaded. A Singh standing close to Baba Ji when reminded Baba Ji of his pledge, such a miracle happened which had never happened in the world before. Baba Ji held his head in his left hand & with his right hand he swayed the Khanda with such a force that the enemies got stunned and started fleeing.

From the place where today stands the Gurdwara Sahib, Baba Deep Singh Ji threw his head which landed at Sri Harmandir Sahib. Antim Sanskar (final rights) of BABA DEEP SINGH JI and other Shaheed Singhs was done here.

Sardar Jassa Singh Ramgarhia constructed a memorial to the famed martyr. In the 19th century Akali Phula Singh replaced the memorial platform into a magnificent gurdwara. The Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee enlarged and developed this important gurdwara into the present complex in the early 1920s.
