Sri Guru Nanak Sat Sang Sabha traces its roots back to the 1950s when families living in the Katong area used to gather at the homes of the Sangat to conduct Kirtan. As the congregation (Sangat) grew it became evident that a permanent place was required to meet the spiritual needs of the Sikhs living in that area. A bungalow was purchased at Wilkinson Road by Sardar Inder Singh Bajaj for this purpose in 1962. The adjoining bungalow was bought the following year and a permanent Gurdwara was erected in 1969. It was built in tradition of architecture of Gurdwaras found in India. It is also reported to be the first Gurdwara outside of India to have a marble "Paalki" services in the form of morning and evening diwans are held daily and a more comprehensive programme takes place every Sunday. Important anniversaries in the Sikh calendar such as the birthday's of the Sikh Gurus (Gurpurbs)and Vaisakhi are also celebrated. All services are performed strictly according to the Sikh traditions. A key feature of the Sabha in the early years was its effort at recording and disstributing Kirtan and Katha cassettes and CDs to Sikhs around the world. This effort was undertaken primarily by the late Sardar Amir Singh. Many of these recordings can still be found in the Gurdwara's library. The Gurdwara has a well stocked library and Dharam Parchar Centre to look after the needs of Sikhs in residing in Singapore and beyond. The Gurdwara has also undertaken many projects in translating Punjabi and Sikh literary works into English. The Gurdwara also conducts music classes (Gurmat Sangeet) and classes for young children reinforcing Sikh culture and values. The Sabha also has a youth wing which is active in sports and many other activities. The Istri Sat Sang Sabha (exclusively for ladies only) has its programs on Friday mornings.
